Your pet’s emergency kit

Ready.gov recommends packing these for every pet:

  • Food and water for at least several days, plus bowls
  • Any medications, with a written schedule
  • Copies of vaccination records in a waterproof bag
  • A recent photo of you with your pet, to prove ownership if you’re separated
  • A collar or harness with ID tags, and a leash
  • A sturdy carrier for each cat or small dog
  • Litter, a small litter box, waste bags and paper towels
  • A familiar toy or blanket to reduce stress

Make sure they can be found

Microchip your pets and keep your contact information up to date with the chip company. Tags fall off, chips don’t.

Plan where you’ll go

Many emergency shelters only accept service animals. Find pet-friendly hotels along your evacuation route now, and ask friends or family outside your area if they could take your pets in a pinch.

Rotate the food

Check expiration dates on stored pet food and treats every few months. Use the oldest food first and replace it, the same way you’d rotate your own pantry.
